The optimacasa House

„Luxury“ is used frequently in connection with properties in Majorca, on closer inspection it is often all show and no substance. Which is a bit ironic given the prices for those properties. In the chapter „conventional building“, the disadvantages of the traditional method of construction are explained. Additionally, the maintenance costs for heating or cooling might be extremely high due to missing insulation.

The optimacasa-house with regard to heating and cooling is a zero-energy house. Heating and hot water is run by solar power and even the electricity for the pumps and the heat-exchanger is self-produced. Wherever possible, ecologically material is used. Therfore the buidling envelope is insulated with natural corkboard. The wall plaster exists of breathable lime mortar. The windows show a five times better k-value than locally used double-glazed windows. Not only rain water is collected and used, also water from the sinks, showers and bath tubs is recycled and used a second time for the garden, washing, toilet flush etc.
