Do it yourself or buy something built?
For me no question! Even though you need to calculate at least three years from the purchase of the land to the termination, only self-construction can be considered.

Despite the real estate crisis the prices for nice properties in good locations will hardly be reduced and the building quality is generally quite bad. So if I am going to spend so much money on a property I do expect a fair countervalue.
A finca in the countryside or a town house? Both have got advantages and disadvantages. I have decided for a town house, because I am convinced by its advantages. It might be lovely to live in the countryside, but you should consider that you always rely on a car and you might find the solitude not always an advantage. In the end the decision is up to ones liking.

Important though, wherever the new domicile shall be: Electricity, water and telephone are not to be taken for granted. The connection of electricity to your house can sum up easily up to 150.000 Euros and fast internet is generally a no-go in the countryside. In any case you should consider carefully if, besides a nice view and a quiet location, the rest is right, too.
Building by yourself does not need to become an adventure.
There are reliable partners, companies with plenty of experience and quality awareness but in any case it requires patience and sometimes diplomacy. Last but not least: it is not so important to communicate in "Mallorquin", the local language, but you should be able to express yourself in Spanish.
